SEKEM

SEKEM is an Egyptian social enterprise that implements sustainability initiatives under a holistic vision of sustainable development.

Mission Statement

SEKEM aims to develop the individual, society and environment through a holistic approach that integrates ecology, economy, societal and cultural life.

Work Scope

SEKEM’s holistic approach to sustainable development is symbolized through a "Sustainability Flower”, with which the organization represents the four dimensions of ecology, economy, society, and culture. Instead of operating in silos, their work areas follow that logic and are deeply intertwined.

- Ecology. SEKEM focuses on transforming arid areas into fertile soil through regenerative practices such as organic and biodynamic farming, by using compost, biofertilizers, natural pest control, and efficient irrigation or water management systems. This is a holistic, regenerative approach that treats the farm as a self-sustaining living organism.

- Economy. SEKEM promotes a business philosophy called the “Economy of Love”, which promotes ethical and transparent value chains paired with fair trade and working conditions.

- Society. The societal pillar focuses on protecting and advocating for human rights in all activities and areas of influence. This encompasses the provision of fair salaries, healthy and safe workplaces, the promotion of gender equality, and the adherence to Fairtrade practices along SEKEM’s supply chain.

- Culture. Through the SEKEM Development Foundation and other initiatives, the

group promotes lifelong learning and individual development to concurrently enhance self-awareness and living conditions, ultimately striving to contribute to the development of the community and the country.
